Alexander Petrov

Alexander Petrov's Rusalka (Mermaid) from 1996 (after Alexander Pushkin)
Petrov is basically astonishing- one of the only people in the world who has not only attempted but completely mastered animating pastel oil paintings on glass. His techniques are too complex for me to remember and post here but I know he uses his fingers, not a brush, and that the moving paint you're looking at is actually composed of several layers on several different pieces of glass, all worked on and moved around individually. Phew! His adaptaption of Old Man and the Sea won an oscar and his latest work My Love might be released on DVD by Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli. (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, etc.)
