Attila Csihar in NYC

Experimental vocalist Attila Csihar performing alongside Sunn O))) at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple recently. This was just one of his outlandish costumes for the night. Unlike most venues in the world, this Masonic temple has no sound restrictions.

Theo Jansen

Theo Jansen is an artist who studied physics. Theo Jansen is a genius. Theo Jansen has created a host of wind-automated, water-repellant creatures called Strandbeests who walk around the beaches of Holland on their own. If you want to know more and see some footage that is at least a little more clear then get involved.

Alexander Petrov

Alexander Petrov's Rusalka (Mermaid) from 1996 (after Alexander Pushkin)
Petrov is basically astonishing- one of the only people in the world who has not only attempted but completely mastered animating pastel oil paintings on glass. His techniques are too complex for me to remember and post here but I know he uses his fingers, not a brush, and that the moving paint you're looking at is actually composed of several layers on several different pieces of glass, all worked on and moved around individually. Phew! His adaptaption of Old Man and the Sea won an oscar and his latest work My Love might be released on DVD by Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli. (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, etc.)
